Server Infrastructure Migration and Centralized Backup Implementation — SVC Service Case Study
Server Infrastructure Migration and Centralized Backup Implementation
Project Overview:
The client was using several virtual servers hosted by a third-party cloud provider to support corporate services, accounting systems, and internal business operations.
The infrastructure consisted of three Windows Servers and one Linux Server operating under limited resources, high recurring costs, and without a proper backup solution.
The SVC Service team performed a full migration of the server infrastructure to a dedicated physical server in the Hetzner data center, building a secure virtualized environment with centralized backup management.
Initial Conditions and Limitations:
- No полноценous backup system for virtual machines.
- High risk of critical business data loss.
- High cloud infrastructure rental costs.
- Limited scalability options.
- Insufficient computing resources for stable service performance.
- No isolated internal network between servers.
- Direct external access to internal services.
- No centralized monitoring or backup control.
Project Goals:
- Reduce recurring infrastructure costs.
- Improve corporate service performance.
- Implement a professional backup solution.
- Create a secure internal server network.
- Increase the security level of the infrastructure.
- Provide full control, scalability, and independence from the previous provider.
Architectural Solution:
A new server architecture was implemented using a dedicated physical server in the Hetzner data center with Proxmox VE virtualization.
- Hetzner Dedicated Server — physical infrastructure platform.
- Proxmox VE — virtualization environment for centralized server management.
- Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) — centralized backup platform.
- Virtual MikroTik router — routing, segmentation, and network security.
- Isolated internal server network.
- Access control and inter-server traffic filtering via firewall.
Implemented Tasks:
- Audit of the existing server infrastructure.
- Rental and preparation of a dedicated physical server at Hetzner.
- Deployment of the Proxmox VE virtualization platform.
- Migration of 3 Windows Servers and 1 Linux Server without data loss.
- Minimized service downtime during migration.
- Optimization of CPU, RAM, and storage allocation.
- Deployment of a virtual MikroTik router.
- Creation of a secure internal server network.
- Network segmentation between services.
- Restriction of direct external access to internal systems.
- Firewall implementation and inter-server traffic control.
- Deployment of Proxmox Backup Server.
- Configuration of scheduled automatic backups.
- Implementation of backup retention policies.
- Testing disaster recovery scenarios.
- Infrastructure monitoring configuration.
- Alert system setup for failures and overload conditions.
Tools and Technologies Used:
- Hetzner Dedicated Server
- Proxmox VE
- Proxmox Backup Server (PBS)
- MikroTik RouterOS
- Windows Server
- Linux Server
- Firewall & Network Segmentation
- Infrastructure Monitoring
Project Results:
- Fully automated centralized server backup system.
- Fast recovery capabilities after failures or incidents.
- Incremental backups with minimal infrastructure load.
- Backup integrity verification.
- Rapid restoration of individual files or entire virtual machines.
- Improved performance of corporate services.
- Reduced recurring infrastructure expenses.
- Creation of a secure internal server environment.
- Improved service isolation and infrastructure security.
- Full control over server infrastructure.
- Readiness for future scaling.
- Reduced dependency on the previous cloud provider.
This project enabled the client to move from a limited and risky cloud infrastructure to a modern, high-performance, and secure server platform with centralized backup management and full control over business data.
SVC Service delivered the complete implementation cycle: from infrastructure audit and migration to secure architecture deployment, backup implementation, and ongoing technical support.
