How Long Will Mobile Communication Work in Ukraine During a “Total” Blackout

Ukrainian mobile operators regularly report on improved network resilience.

However, amid ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure, more and more people are asking a simple question:

what will happen to mobile communication if power outages become long-lasting or truly nationwide?

Let’s take a closer look at how long networks can realistically operate, which services last the longest, and how each of us can help keep communication available.

Autonomous network operation: up to 10 hours

Over the past few years, operators have focused heavily on upgrading backup power systems.

Old lead-acid batteries are being replaced with modern lithium ones — they charge faster and provide a much longer operating time.

According to official data:

  • most base stations are capable of operating autonomously for up to 10 hours
  • networks are reinforced with hundreds of thousands of batteries and thousands of generators

It is important to understand: “up to 10 hours” is possible only under relatively favorable conditions.

Actual operating time depends on:

  • network load
  • outside temperature
  • frequency of power outages
  • charging opportunities between outages

Calls last longer than mobile internet

During power outages, mobile internet performance usually degrades — and this is expected.

When home internet disappears, thousands of users simultaneously switch to mobile networks.

At such moments, network load increases several times, and equipment simply cannot process all the traffic.

That is why critical services receive priority:

  • voice calls
  • SMS messages
  • emergency calls

Mobile internet, especially 4G, consumes significantly more power and drains backup batteries much faster.

What every user can do

Network stability depends not only on equipment, but also on user behavior.

During outages, it is recommended to follow simple rules:

  • avoid “heavy” content — video streaming and large downloads
  • prefer voice calls and text messages over video calls
  • if possible, use energy-independent internet — for example, fiber-optic connections powered by a power bank
